Why are all cabs in Manhattan in New York yellow, while most cabs in other towns are i a variety of colours?
Yellow is thought to be the most visible colour. Specific to Manhattan is the custom of catching a cab as it cruises by, rather than phoning and ordering it. Therefore all taxis are painted this colour to be more visible for users.
In other towns taxis are usually ordered in advance so they don't have to be able to draw attention as much as in Manhattan.
